Brazilian and South African Covid-19 variants now in Tower Hamlets

The pandemic is not over yet. Brazilian and South African variants of the Coronavirus (Covid-19) have been detected in Tower Hamlets and residents in specific areas are urged to get tested.

The Brazilian and South African variants of the original Coronavirus (Covid-19) are called ‘variants of concern’ because it is not currently known if they can spread more easily, cause more severe disease, or may not be supported by vaccinations.

The only way to find out is by testing. You can check if you live in a postcode where residents need to get tested here.

There are currently four variants of concern in the UK, the South African variant, two different Kent variants, and the Brazilian variant.

Brazilian and South African Coronavirus (Covid-19) variant areas in Tower Hamlets

The Brazil and South Africa variants variants have been identified in the area around E1 4 and E1 3 and some of E1 0, E1 1, E1 2, E1 5, E14 7, E2 0, E2 6, E3 4.

An additional test unit will be opened at at Gouldman House, E1 4HQ from 8:30am to 3pm on Sunday 2nd May.

People can book a test online, through the NHS Covid-19 app or by calling 119. If you have symptoms you must book a test via the national portal.

Test sites at Watney and Ecology Pavilion

The nearest test sites to the areas of concern in Tower Hamlets are Idea Store Watney Market, 260 Commercial Street, E1 2FB and the Ecology Pavilion, Grove Rd, Bow, London E3 5TW

Appointments at both these test sites can be booked online.

Home test kits will also soon be available for collection from a number of community sites.

Anyone with questions about the Brazilian and South African variants or Coronavirus (Covid-19) can contact the council’s helpline on 020 7364 3030 (9am to 5pm including the bank holiday weekend). The helpline can also provide information on support available for those who may need to isolate.
