City of Tower Hamlets. How does that sound? Cool, innit? That’s the future vision for the borough if Cllr. Rabina Khan (Liberal, Shadwell) has her way. And she usually does Moley understands.
Details are minimal at the moment so we will update this post when we get them but thought we should share some positive news with you as soon as possible as we all need some.
Cllr. Khan is to formally propose a cross-party group to work on the City bid.
EEE Comment
From what we can gather it seems Cllr. Khan has come up with the bid for City status independently and in so doing has completely outmanoeuvred Mayor Biggs and Tower Hamlets Labour Party.
In any other part of the UK it would be a given that all parties would support a city bid but this is Tower Hamlets so…
Reality is that if the Mayor and Labour councillors do not wholeheartedly support this initiative by Cllr. Khan they will be toast.
Maybe if Tower Hamlets Labour spent more time doing what they are supposed to do and less time indulging in tribal politics they might have thought of how the borough can move on and come up with this idea.
But they didn’t.
No surprises there.

As community journalists we do exactly what it says on our tin – we work for the community.
In Tower Hamlets, which covers most of London’s East End, that means we spend a lot of time investigating allegations of political corruption.
It is an unfortunate fact that the poorest local authority in the country is still beset by the highest levels of corruption.
As Love Wapping we were instrumental in exposing the electoral corruption of Mayor Lutfur Rahman.
